£40m Project Boosts Great Yarmouth's Flood Defences, Safeguarding 4,500 Homes
A £40 million project to bolster flood defences in Great Yarmouth kicked off on Friday 10 January 2019. The scheme aims to safeguard over 4,500 homes and businesses from tidal flooding for the long term.
The project, part of the Environment Agency's £2.6bn investment in flood and coastal defences from 2015-2021, involves refurbishing 4 kilometres of flood defence walls across the town. This includes revamping 46 walls using an innovative technique that can extend their lifespan by up to 30 years.
The £40.3 million investment also allocates £6.2 million for ongoing maintenance. The project received over £32 million in government funding, with additional contributions from New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, Norfolk County Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, and local quayside businesses. The Environment Agency provided £8.2 million to fund the flood protection project.
The £40 million project in Great Yarmouth is set to protect over 4,500 properties from tidal flooding for decades. The refurbished flood defence walls, along with the allocated maintenance funds, ensure the town's resilience against future flood threats.
