Almaty commences its fountain season
In the bustling heart of Almaty, the self-proclaimed "City of Fountains," a dazzling display of water jets springs to life. With a impressive count of over 120 aquatic marvels dotting its avenues and parks, these gushing delights add undeniable charm to the city's landscape.
Although there isn't a definitive list of the most noteworthy fountains, a couple of standouts deserve a shout-out, like the laid-back charm of the Nedelka Fountain and the romantic allure of the Fountain of Desires.
For a relaxing respite, check out the Nedelka Fountain nestled cozily amid the city's central residential area. Its terraced design offers the perfect spot for unwinding amid the hustle and bustle of city life, especially during the warmer months. Adding to its attractions, it's a popular pit stop for walking tours showcasing Almaty's central and park areas.
On the other hand, the romantic heart of the city beats near the Fountain of Desires, shaped like an apple, symbolizing Almaty's nickname, "The Grand Apple." Lovebirds often flock here to toss coins into its waters and make heartfelt wishes, giving an extra romantic touch to the city's tourist attractions.
Generation after generation, 56 communal fountains come to life every year, maintained meticulously until the onset of autumn chill. Eleven of these are "dry" fountains, a safer choice as they keep all pipelines and equipment inside an inaccessible zone of the fountain bowl, beneath the paving.
Moreover, Almaty's abundant greenery, combined with its labyrinthine system of fountains, creates a refreshing, cool atmosphere that earns the city a well-deserved spot as one of the greenest cities in the country.
This fabulous display of fountains is all the more captivating when coupled with significant events like the May 1 Day of Unity of the People of Kazakhstan, where city residents gather to marvel at the spectacular fountain launch.
