Amfora Safeguards Time-Honored Olive Oil Procedures, Nightly Boosting Income for Regenerative Producers

In the heart of Greece, Amfora is making a significant impact by connecting traditional olive oil producers with the market, thereby promoting regenerative agriculture and supporting the rural economy.

Amfora, an olive oil offtaker and marketer, is currently raising capital via a crowdfunding campaign. This innovative company is dedicated to honouring and preserving ancient olive oil traditions, and it achieves this by partnering with small-scale producers who use time-honoured techniques. One such producer is Zakros, an agricultural cooperative in the Sitia region of Crete.

Zakros' olive oil producers make use of other vegetation to establish the boundaries of the olive groves and co-cultivate inside the grove. This approach is in line with the area's status as a Protected Geographical Indication of Laconia, where techniques are dictated by thousands of years of traditional cultivation. The olive oil produced by Zakros carries a "protected designation of origin" (PDO), meaning it is produced in a specific region using practices more than 3,000 years old.

Gold Metamorphosis, another producer partnered with Amfora, is located in Laconia. The area where Gold Metamorphosis operates is part of the Global Unesco Sitia Geopark, characterized by complex terrain and biodiversity. Gold Metamorphosis products are now available in Switzerland and London due to the Amfora partnership.

Pierrakos from Gold Metamorphosis connected with Amfora to introduce their products to markets beyond Greece without compromising quality. Amfora's approach to regenerative agriculture acknowledges that everyone is at a different stage and context in their journey. For Amfora, regenerative agriculture is a journey, not a set concept.

Amfora removes intermediaries in the conventional olive oil supply chain, buying directly from producers and selling products at competitive prices directly to purchasers. By doing so, it ensures farmers receive fair prices while maintaining product integrity, quality, and origin branding on packaging and promotion.

Amfora prioritizes the social aspect of regenerative agriculture, including the generational nature of its producers. By facilitating what Amfora calls “a real value-for-money pathway,” it ensures consumers and businesses recognize and pay appropriately for high-quality, traditionally made, and regenerative olive oil products.

In summary, Amfora’s role is to bridge the gap between traditional, regenerative olive oil producers in Greece and the market. By doing so, it ensures farmer livelihoods, product respect, and preservation of ancient practices. This model not only supports the rural economy but also affirms the cultural and economic value of regenerative olive oil.
