Art Gallery Hidden Among the Aegidians
The Aegidien Museum, located at Behind St. Aegidien 38100 Brunswick, is a cultural gem that offers visitors a unique insight into the diverse history of Lower Saxony. The museum can be contacted via Tel.: 0531 12252424, E-mail: [email protected], or through their website: https://3landesmuseen-our-website.de/our-websiteisches-landesmuseum.
The permanent exhibition at the Aegidien Museum, titled "A Part of Us. German-Jewish Stories from Lower Saxony", showcases a remarkable collection that reflects both Jewish religious customs and German and Lower Saxon culture. The exhibition also features the preserved interior furnishings of the former Hornburg Synagogue from southern Brunswick, which were incorporated into the collection in 1924. This significant rescue effort was made possible with great support from the Jewish Community of Brunswick and private donors.
Karl Steinacker, the then director of the Fatherland Museum, played a significant role in preserving the baroque interior of the Hornburg Synagogue. Today, it stands as a testament to the rich cultural history shared by non-Jewish and Jewish societies in Lower Saxony.
The museum's unique collection demonstrates that minorities can actively participate in a heterogeneous society without giving up their identities. This is further illustrated in the special exhibition "A Part of Us. German-Jewish Stories from Lower Saxony", which showcases the active participation of minorities in society while preserving their unique identities.
Admission prices for the permanent exhibitions at the Aegidien Museum are 4 € for adults, 3 € for reduced admission, and 2 € for children from 6 years. Children under 5 years enter for free. A combination day ticket allows visitors to visit both the permanent exhibitions at the Aegidien Museum and St. Ulrici-Brothers on the same date.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and is closed on Mondays. For the most up-to-date information about events and opening hours, please visit the museum's website at https://3landesmuseen-our-website.de/our-websiteisches-landesmuseum/visit/calendar.
During the summer, the Aegidien Museum offers an event series called "State Museum Live", featuring atmospheric concerts in the museum garden. These events provide an additional opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich cultural history of Lower Saxony.
The Jewish population in Germany, though a small minority, is a significant part of Lower Saxon history. The Aegidien Museum serves as a vital platform for preserving and showcasing this history, offering visitors a valuable educational experience.
