Art, Strategy and Local Renaissance: Lena Weisman Class of 2022

In the heart of rural Virginia, Gloucester Main Street is seeing a renaissance under the leadership of Lena Weisman. Weisman, who graduated from Lehigh University's Art Gallery (LUAG) in 2022, is spearheading community development, historic preservation, and economic growth in the town.

Weisman's journey with LUAG was transformative, teaching her not just how to think but how to do. Her senior year project, "Reimagining Museums," became the first exhibition for LUAG's interdisciplinary project space, LUAG LAB, inside the Zoellner Arts Center.

The project explored the use of immersive technology to enhance museum experiences. One aspect involved a "digital overlay" on a painting, with touchpoints for viewers to learn more about the work. This hands-on experience at LUAG proved particularly valuable for Weisman.

Weisman credits LUAG for teaching her to consider both the big picture and small details, skills that are now essential in her role as executive director of Gloucester Main Street. She was introduced to LUAG during her sophomore year through an exhibitions course.

Weisman believes in the power of art to attract investment and stimulate business, historic preservation, and building rehabilitation in communities. She sees the impact of art on communities, specifically in small towns like Gloucester and South Bethlehem.

Art, according to Weisman, plays a crucial role in community development. It not only adds beauty and cultural richness but also drives economic growth. In Gloucester, Weisman is working tirelessly to bring this vision to life.

From strategic planning and thinking about short-term and long-term goals, to leading community initiatives, Weisman is making a significant impact in rural Virginia. Her journey from LUAG to Gloucester Main Street is a testament to the power of art and education in driving positive change.
