Unleashing Sustainability in Harburg: A Look at the 12th Sustainability Awards

It's a big day for Harburg, the district that recently shone in the limelight for its commitment to a greener future. Last Friday, the Harburg District Assembly honored some remarkable sustainable activities in the district with the 12th Sustainability Award. Four lucky projects were blessed with a total of 5,000 euros.

First in line to nab the grand prize of 2,000 euros was the innovative "Class Representatives/Seminar" project of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium. This holistic initiative, hailed as a pioneer in Harburg, aims to spark an understanding of democracy and sustainability among children and young people. It also bolsters their personal growth and acts as a beacon for other schools to follow suit.

Hot on the heels of the first prize, the Loki Schmidt Foundation's Fischbeker Heidehaus bagged the second prize of 1,500 euros with their "ECOnnections - In the Network of Nature" project. Impressed by the project's professional approach, the jury lauded the way it imparts environmental know-how to numerous kids and teens. The project's standout feature is the scientific equipment it equips participating students with, transforming them into inquisitive researchers.

Shared honors for the third prize went to two projects. On one side, Dorfstromer e.V.'s "Dorfstromer Carsharing in the Countryside" took home 750 euros. Meanwhile, the Center for Energy, Water, and Environmental Technology (ZEWU, Chamber of Crafts Hamburg) won the same amount for "Energy Security and Climate Transition: Further Training for Renewable Energy and Climate Protection Professionals."

For those looking to delve deeper into these projects, scouting local educational institutions, community news, or environmental organizations in Harburg could prove fruitful. Interestingly, sustainability projects in schools often focus on environmental education, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and promoting eco-friendly practices among students. These projects can take various forms such as environmental clubs, curriculum integration, community engagement, and leadership roles for students. Notably, successful projects may receive local or national awards or be highlighted in the media to inspire continued action. Here's to more sustainable endeavors in Harburg!

The Loki Schmidt Foundation's home-and-garden project, "ECOnnections - In the Network of Nature", is a sustainable-living initiative that aims to educate children and teenagers about the environment using scientific equipment, earning it the second prize in the 12th Sustainability Awards. Other notable projects in the district, such as Dorfstromer e.V.'s "Dorfstromer Carsharing in the Countryside" and the Center for Energy, Water, and Environmental Technology's (ZEWU, Chamber of Crafts Hamburg) "Energy Security and Climate Transition: Further Training for Renewable Energy and Climate Protection Professionals", also focus on sustainable living and were recipients of the 12th Sustainability Awards.
