Berlin Boosts Cycling Infrastructure with 604 New Lockers at Eberswalde Station
Berlin has bolstered its cycling infrastructure with the installation of mobile collective locking facilities at four locations. These garages, architecturally unique with wood-concrete construction and larch wood roofs, provide secure parking spaces for cyclists. Meanwhile, the Bike+Ride offensive aims to add over 140 secure parking spots at three S-Bahn stations by 2025.
The garage at Eberswalde station was constructed to address growing demand and commuter flows, ending unordered parking around the station. It offers 604 parking spaces, including dedicated areas for cargo bicycles and e-bikes, along with amenities like air pumps, tools, and lockable boxes with power connections.
The Bike+Ride offensive includes a project at the Schöneweide station, designed by the Berlin-based Leitplan GmbH Planning and Development Company. infraVelo is responsible for the planning, construction, and subsequent operation, targeting completion by early 2027. This project aims to add over 140 secure parking spots at three S-Bahn stations.
Infravelo also plans to create over 1,300 new parking spaces at Berlin's main station by 2030, but initial plans are all that exist so far.
Berlin's commitment to cycling infrastructure is evident in these projects. However, the city must prove it can complete these bike parking projects without getting stuck in bureaucracy, as previous delays due to complex planning procedures and staff shortages have shown.
