Spotting Feathered Friends: Berlin's Citizen-Led Bird Count Calls for Your Help

  • Wings and Warbles!

The urban jungle of Berlin hums with the presence of feathered wonders, from sleek peregrine falcons to the vibrant blue kingfishers. Want to find out who's fluttering around town? Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV are inviting citizens like you to join the hunt. From May 9 to 11, it's the "Hour of Backyard Birds" – time to grab your binoculars and contribute!

If you're wintering in Berlin's city center, keep an eye out for the spirited goldfinch adorned in a red-faced, yellow-winged suit. Often known as the common chaffinch, these cheery creatures will be your friendly neighborhood avian pals. For those venturing beyond the city limits, the redstart might show off its trademark red tail jazz as it serenades. Don't forget to note common residents like sparrows, pigeons, and more!

Last year's count tallied an astounding 36,000 avian residents.

Are you ready to play birdwatcher for a day? Partake in this citizen science project by observing feathered friends from a tranquil spot in your garden, park, or window. Then, jot down the highest number of each species you spot within an hour. You can submit your findings online, via app, or by good, old-fashioned mail. Your efforts will help the conservation associations understand the pulse of the avian world, complementing official population trends. A whopping 1,980 individuals participated last year and contributed to the amazing bird count!

If you're located in Berlin, don't hesitate to join the fun with local NABU groups. On May 11 at 9:00 AM, head to the Wartenberger field area in the Lichtenberg district. For those with little feathered explorers, catch the kids' event on May 10 at 2:00 PM at Rummelsburger Bucht.

Psst...Did you know? Berlin's woods, waterways, and green spaces teem with our feathered friends! Keep your eyes peeled for the likes of robins, tits, and sparrows (yep, Berlin's considered the "sparrow capital" of Germany!). For those who dare venture out, watch out for noble raptors like eagles, kites, and harriers, and listen for the melodies of the blackbirds and greenfinches. Waterways are home to ducks, geese, and more, especially around canals and ponds. Berlin boasts fantastic spots for birdwatching, with Tempelhofer Feld, Großer Müggelsee, Großer Tiergarten, Landschaftspark Rudow-Altglienicke, and Moorlinse Buch being popular choices [1]. [5][3]
