Blossoming peaks: on-the-spot sales in the outdoors
In a splash of white, soft pink, and deep red, Heidi Ochojski handcrafts the flower arrangements. Before the first customers step foot, she prepares the sales stand at the edge of the field. The peonies are freshly plucked, some still budding, others in full bloom. For a brief spell annually, the flower field in Cambs transforms into a kaleidoscope of blossoms - directly harvested from the field.
Thirteenth different peonies thrive in the fields
A grand total of thirteen unique varieties blossom in the flower fields of Aloys Tacke in Cambs and the Rostock district of Schutow. "The soil here is exceptionally fertile," shares Aloys Tacke. The earth is crisscrossed by natural earthworm tunnels, ensuring optimal airflow and nutrient supply. The outcome? Vibrant, long-lasting blooms with a potent aroma.
Tacke opts for a distinct approach from conventional flower trading. The peonies are picked fresh from the field – no lengthy transportation or cooling chains necessary. Those who prefer can even pick the flowers themselves.
After the peony season, gladioli and sunflowers take the stage
The peonies' fleeting blooming season ignites an annual rush. Whether it's the peonies' time to shine or not, the fields will open regularly for direct sales: in Cambs from 9 am to 6 pm, in Rostock from 10 am to 6 pm.
Once the peony season comes to an end, other radiant beauties will step into the limelight. From July to October, flowers can be bought directly from the field, says Aloys Tacke. "Then there will be dahlias, poppies, sunflowers, or even gladioli. We've also planted herbs. There will be red beets and in the autumn, our pumpkins," adds the farmer.
*Noteworthy while growing peonies, the following pest-control practices are often employed:- Inspecting the foliage for signs of disease and removing any infected leaves- Applying organic-based fungicides to prevent mildew- Rotating crops and using a soil amendment to avoid planting the same variety repeatedly in the same area
As the flower season progresses different blooms, ranging from roses, hydrangeas, and lilies, can typically be found in these fields. Good luck finding your favorite bouquet!
