Streets for Two-Wheels: A Fresh Wind on Luegallee

Hop on your bicycle! The new bike route on the Luegallee has officially landed, and it's stirring excitement among cyclists across the city. Starting this week (6th of Sept), cars on the street will be limited to a humble 30 km/h, as the six-month trial period kicks off. But what's new exactly? Read on to discover the revamped bike-friendly Luegallee.

Roll on out, cars, it's bike time!

One lane, one speed, and green zones galore – that's the sandwich Luegallee butters up for cyclists. The right lane becomes a cyclist's paradise, leaving just one narrower lane for other vehicular traffic. Be prepared for a leisurely jaunt, as the speed limit for cars lowers to a snail's pace of 30 km/h.

Don your helmets and gears, fellow cyclists – picture's worth a thousand words! The freshly marked bike route is a sight to behold (City of Düsseldorf, David Young).

Residents voice their opinions

Citizens living around the Oberkassel district had the opportunity to share their thoughts on the traffic trial before it commenced. Over a thousand questionnaires from residents and surveys from local businesses were gathered, with concerns touching on traffic safety, noise pollution, and the quality of life on the Luegallee.

Stay tuned for more engagement! The trial will host two more phases for the public to chime in. "We'll be in close touch with the community and keep tabs on the traffic on the Luegallee," assured Mobility Commissioner, Jochen Kral. A mid-September online survey, in-person event, and an information booth on the Barbarossaplatz are among the highlights for the next participation phase.

The trial's goal is crystal clear: making the Luegallee a more livable, bike-friendly destination, while easing the commute for cyclists and pedestrians. And here's why...

Quieting down the Luegallee

Besides promoting cycling, the trial aims to investigate if the reduced speed limit can help reduce the Luegallee's irritating rumble. Will 30 km/h lower the decibels enough to make the street a melody to our ears?

Spreading the traffic flow

The completion of the B7 interchange, Heerdter Lohweg, will reroute traffic on the left bank of the Rhine, meaning fewer cars on the Luegallee. With over 1,300 cyclists using the street daily (as per current traffic data), it's about time the street gets the dedicated bike lane it deserves. The trial intends to balance the needs of car users with the ever-growing cycling community. Traffic counts will monitor the progress throughout the trial.

So buckle up and enjoy the ride, Düsseldorf! In six months, we'll make a decision on whether the bike-friendly Luegallee is here to stay. But with the citizens' support, businesses thriving, and a quieter Luegallee in our sights, who knows what the future holds? Stay tuned!

As we amplify the bicycle-friendly atmosphere on Luegallee, the finance industry might see a boost as more cyclists travel, promoting a healthier lifestyle. In the home-and-garden sector, initiatives like this could potentially encourage a surge in demand for bicycle storage solutions. Moreover, with less traffic on the Luegallee due to the trial, the transportation industry may experience a shift in commuting patterns, steering toward more sustainable and eco-friendly modes of travel.
