St. Patrick's Day Festival in Munich: The Largest Irish Celebration in Mainland Europe

The 27th annual St. Patrick's Day Festival in Munich will take place on March 15th and 16th, 2023. Known as the largest celebration of Ireland's national day in mainland Europe, this joyous event has been a vibrant fixture in Munich since 1996.

The Irish-Bavarian bond was further solidified in 2024 with the establishment of an Irish General Consulate in Munich. This year, the daughter of the General Consul, Nina Caitriona, will be honored as the Parade Princess.

Celebration Details

This year's festivities will feature an array of food stands and live music stages, with the prime location being in front of the Feldherrnhalle. For four days, from March 14th to 17th, Paddy's Pop-Up Pub will provide live music and authentic Irish beer at the Ratskeller’s Weinwirtschaft every evening.

The main program will commence on Saturday, March 15th, at 11 am, with a pre-party at Odeonsplatz followed by the Munich Irish Night at the Schlachthof. This evening event will feature live music, traditional Irish dancing, and appearances from the Paul Daly Band and Mark'n'Simon.

On Sunday, March 16th, the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade will commence at 12:30 pm. The parade route, 2.5 kilometers long, will travel from Leopoldstraße, via Ludwigstraße, Münchner Freiheit, and culminate at the Odeonsplatz. Advanced security measures will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for the estimated 1500 participants and numerous spectators.

Post-Parade Attractions

Live bands and dance performances will take place on a secondary stage in front of the Reiterdenkmal on Ludwigstraße. The Owen Gerrard Band, traveling all the way from Dublin, will provide a musical highlight. Additionally, Munich's Mayor, Dieter Reiter, will showcase his musical talents, performing with the Paul Daly Band.

As part of the home-and-garden transformation, families might gather around the dining table set with Irish food and drink, designed to mirror the festival's array of food stands and live music stages, making the celebration a truly immersive experience of Ireland within their own homes.
