Christmas generosity on the rise: British citizens aiming to give more gifts this holiday season
Charitable Giving Remains Strong in the UK Amid Economic Challenges
The festive spirit of giving continues to thrive in the UK, according to new research published by WRS Insurance Brokers. Despite ongoing cost of living challenges, the study reveals that Brits are not only giving money but are also stepping up in other ways to support charities.
The research shows that over half of respondents (50%) are most likely to support community charities this festive season. This finding is particularly significant as approximately two-in-five households (39%) in the UK are currently in 'serious financial difficulties' or 'struggling'.
While the number of people donating has dropped to a record low (only about 50% of adults), those who do give are donating larger average amounts (£72 on average), resulting in a substantial total of £15.4 billion donated in 2024.
The continuation of charitable giving is sustained by fewer donors giving more generously, strong public trust and calls for transparency, enhanced corporate social responsibility integrating skills and community support, culturally embedded giving practices, and the adaptive strategies of charities themselves.
Interestingly, 74% of respondents plan to donate items, 52% intend to volunteer their time, and 29% will share donation opportunities on social media. Experts found 79% of respondents are planning to maintain their charitable contributions this Christmas, with 13% pledging to give even more. Only a mere 6% are planning to reduce their donations.
Gungor Baykan, head of broking and operations at WRS Insurance Brokers, stated that despite ongoing financial pressures in the UK, people's generosity and commitment to giving at this time of year remains strong. He further added that the research also reveals that people are stepping up in other ways to support charities.
