City commemorates 40th anniversary with a series of chosen productions at La Casa Encendida
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Spain's longest-running cultural television program, 'Metropolis', will host a three-day marathon event at La Casa Encendida in Madrid. The festivities will take place on May 30th, 31st, and June 1st.
Over three days, 35 historic programs from the show's archives will be screened. Key figures in art, music, visual culture, and contemporary thought will select the sessions, offering a visual and critical journey through themes, authors, and movements that have defined the last four decades of audiovisual creation.
Prominent titles include "Akira" (1990), one of the most requested episodes over the years, which delves into the aesthetic, narrative, and political potential of Japanese animation. Other notable episodes are dedicated to influential artists such as Nam June Paik, considered the father of video art, and David Hockney, a pioneer in pop art and technological experimentation.
The marathon will culminate on Sunday with a program dedicated to Philip Glass, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century and a central figure in minimalist music. This program will be available exclusively during this cycle due to the selection by Luis Valverde.
The event extends beyond iconic artists, featuring programs dedicated to creators like Marina Abramović, Pipilotti Rist, Esther Ferrer, and Ángela de la Cruz. These choices emphasis the interdisciplinary perspective of the cycle, selected by equally relevant figures in contemporary culture, artists, and collaborators of the program.
Admission to the event is free until capacity is reached. Screening times are as follows:
- Friday, May 30th: 12 PM to 3:30 PM and 4 PM to 8:30 PM
- Saturday, May 31st: 12 PM to 3:30 PM and 4 PM to 8:30 PM
- Sunday, June 1st: 12 PM to 2:30 PM
This anniversary celebration not only recovers influential moments from the program's archives but also reaffirms 'Metropolis' role as a living archive, continuously engaging with the present. Further information about the event can be found on the official website of La Casa Encendida or by contacting them directly.
On Saturday and Sunday, 'Metropolis' will screen programs dedicated to home-and-garden and lifestyle themes, with a focus on sustainable living, featuring creators like Esther Ferrer and Ángela de la Cruz. The marathon event at La Casa Encendida in Madrid, in celebration of the show's 40th anniversary, will also include a program about sustainable living and green spaces in home-and-garden design on June 1st, from 12 PM to 2:30 PM.
