Bremen's Favorite Hangout, Schnoor-Distillery, Facing Demolition

Austria's Schnoor-Distillery, a cornerstone of Bremen's nightlife for five decades, is about to bid adieu. The tenants have been served an eviction notice, and the building is slated for demolition.

The Reason Behind the Demolition

The new owner plans to lease the main building situated at Tiefer 2-4. The current tenants of the annex, where the Schnoor-Distillery resides, have been instructed to vacate by August. As the primary water and heating pipes run through where the distillery stands, the pub has no other option but to relocate.

The Future of the Site

The fate of the building, including the distillery annex, remains uncertain. Max Zeitz, the project developer, has pitched the idea of transforming it into a student residence. It could also be converted into offices. Additionally, there is a proposal for the police station to move in. A definitive decision regarding the building's future isn't expected until the end of the year. However, Zeitz has confirmed that the distillery will not return as a bar. He is open to the idea of converting the space into various parking spots (like bicycle parking), though no decisions have been made on this yet.

The Current Situation

The tenants are desperate to renew their lease and keep the pub operating. The patrons are equally invested in the debate about the distillery's future. For many, it's more than just a watering hole—it's like a second home they're unwilling to part with. Some emphasize the cultural significance of the traditional pub in the Schnoor area. In response, a petition has been started, garnering around 1,300 signatures thus far, urging the city council to save the Schnoor-Distillery. Despite these efforts, Zeitz proclaims that the demolition is a go-ahead.

The Voices on Both Sides

The Schnoor-Distillery's tenants feel frustrated, understanding the new owner's economic motives but hoping to continue running the pub. They hold onto hope with a positive outlook. For the project developer, the annex is a problem due to the pipes located there, ensuring demolition as the only viable solution.

Disheartened by the demolition plans, locals and patrons of Bremen's Schnoor-Distillery are advocating for the preservation of the establishment, viewing it as an integral part of their outdoor-living and home-and-garden lifestyle in the Schnoor area. If the distillery were to relocate, it would undoubtedly disrupt the lifestyle of many, thereby affecting the overall lifestyle in Bremen's favorite hangout.
