New Leadership at Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation Boosts International Competitiveness

Art historian and museum director Marion Ackermann is set to take over as president of Germany's most powerful cultural institution, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK), from June 1, 2025. Her arrival represents an opportunity for an enhanced international presence for the SPK.

Ackermann, known for her expert knowledge, proactive approaches, and strategic intelligence, was inaugurated as the new SPK president on Museum Island in Berlin. Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer lauded her as the right person to steer the SPK towards a prosperous future and increase its visibility on the global stage.

Ackermann's tenure at the Saxon State Art Collections serves as a testament to her transformative influence in the German museum sector. On her first day of work, she will also assume the role of the top boss of Museum Island. Her inauguration incidentally coincided with the farewell ceremony for her predecessor, Hermann Parzinger, who had led the SPK since 2008.

The SPK, backed by the federal government and all states, boasts a workforce of around 2,000 people. It includes the Berlin State Library, several institutes, and the Berlin State Museums with 15 collections and 4.7 million objects across 19 locations. Significant museums under its umbrella are the Picture Gallery, the New National Gallery, and the Pergamon Museum.

Museum Island, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, is home to these renowned institutions and is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025. Ackermann's leadership is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives, attract diverse audiences, and strengthen Berlin's cultural standing as a dynamic metropolis.
