Construction of one of Mainz's biggest playgrounds is underway
In the heart of Mainz-Hechtsheim, the future of the Zagreb playground remains uncertain as the city administration considers its priority list and future budget funds for renovation. The playground, which is one of the largest in Mainz, is located near kindergartens, schools, and residential areas, and some facilities use it as an outdoor area.
The local community, including Hechtsheim district chairwoman Ulrike Cohnen (CDU), has been actively advocating for the playground's preservation and renovation. Cohnen has been in ongoing discussions with the city administration, seeking funding from the city budget. However, no specific budget allocations for replacement equipment were available in 2025, and the decision on renovation depends on future budget priorities.
The current state of the play equipment is a cause for concern. Both the Youth and Family Department and the Environmental Department have confirmed the condition of the equipment in response to inquiries from residents. Due to mold infestation, severe weathering, and lack of stability, some equipment, including the grand swing and climbing frame, must be dismantled by early 2026.
A petition launched in early September aims to advocate for the playground's preservation and renovation. As of September 15, 3 pm, around 1500 people have signed the appeal. The petition states that the loss of the playground would affect children who already have less, exacerbating unequal development opportunities and weakening the quality of life in the neighborhood.
In a bid to alleviate the situation, a small replacement swing is planned for autumn 2025. The replacement swing will stand alone from spring 2026. However, financial resources for the playground's comprehensive renovation are yet to be secured.
Environmental Councilor Janina Steinkruger (Greens) finds the situation 'very annoying and unsatisfactory.' She, along with other community members, is calling for budget funds to be allocated for the playground's renovation in the city budget.
While no budget funds are allocated for replacement equipment this year, the fight for the Zagreb playground continues. The community's unwavering support and the ongoing discussions with the city administration offer a glimmer of hope for the playground's future.
