SHROFFLEoN Transforms Mumbai Apartment into Personal Urban Retreat
Design firm SHROFFLEoN has breathed new life into a 3,400 sq ft apartment in Mumbai's Four Seasons Residences, creating a deeply personal space for an unmet client. The project, which aimed to provide a retreat from the city's urban din, posed unique challenges due to the absence of the homeowners during the design process.
The design included a cozy den, a dedicated intimate space that contributes to a layered spatial experience. The den is a warm nook lined entirely in ageing copper panels, lending it both a tactile richness and a sense of amiability. The den's design subtly expresses the sensibilities of the apartment's occupants through muted materials, in line with the overall approach.
One of the project's larger technical challenges was the addition of the den, which required the relocation of the master bathroom. The spatial shift and relocation prompted a rethinking of the home's spatial language, with the living room being reconfigured to accommodate the den.
Lokendra Vora collaborated with Kayzad Shroff and Maria IJ Leon on the design of the den, which was part of the overall attempt to create a functional home that felt intimate and personal. The designers carefully planned circulation and programmatic zoning to ensure the apartment accommodated various functions without compromising openness and flow.
Thoughtful architectural interventions like alcoves and partitions balance privacy and connectivity, while design elements such as custom joinery and material contrasts further enhanced the sense of a personalized environment. The design includes spatial interventions, with the den being one such example.
