Data Integration in Digital Design and Vector Graphics
Announcing the Digital Design and Vector Graphics Preservation Plan
In a significant move towards safeguarding digital assets, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has unveiled the Digital Design and Vector Graphics Preservation Plan. This strategy aims to ensure the long-term accessibility and usability of digital vector graphic files, focusing on preserving native and widely-used vector formats.
At the heart of this plan is the Adobe Illustrator software, and its primary file format, the AI (Adobe Illustrator Artwork) format. AI files preserve editable elements like strokes, lines, shapes, fills, and layers, essential for ongoing editing and high-quality scaling.
Besides AI, Adobe Illustrator also supports other relevant file formats for preservation and vector graphics archiving. These include:
- PDF (Portable Document Format): Often used for sharing and archiving vector artwork because it can store vector graphics and is widely viewable with free readers without needing Illustrator.
- EPS (Encapsulated PostScript): A flexible, semi-open vector format used for high-resolution printing and cross-platform sharing of vector artwork, supporting editable vector content.
- SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics): An XML-based, web-optimized vector format supported by many editors and browsers, useful for web usage and preservation where open standards are preferred.
The preservation plan recommends saving files in AI format with "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" enabled to retain full editability. However, it also suggests exporting to universal or archival formats like PDF, EPS, and SVG to ensure accessibility beyond Adobe Illustrator over time.
In addition to Adobe Illustrator, the Digital Design and Vector Graphics category also includes the Adobe After Effects project (Binary Variant). The linked open data TTL for both 3DS Max and Adobe After Effects project (Binary Variant) can be found at the following URLs:

- Adobe After Effects project (Binary Variant): https://www.our website.gov/files/lod/dpframework/id/NF00865.ttl
It is important to note that the proposed actions and tools are not exhaustive or universally applicable. The current NARA risk assessment is part of the plans, and the strategies are subject to ongoing review and refinement.
This Digital Design and Vector Graphics Preservation Plan is a significant step forward in ensuring the long-term preservation of digital vector graphics, safeguarding our digital heritage for future generations.

- Engaging in this plan, the National Archives and Records Administration is not only preserving digital assets through the Digital Design and Vector Graphics Preservation Plan but also expanding into home-and-garden and lifestyle content by suggesting Adobe Illustrator and its compatible file formats like SVG for web-based vector graphics.
- To ensure a seamless lifestyle integration, the use of technology in this plan, such as AI format within Adobe Illustrator software, offers versatility and accessibility, making it an ideal choice for everything from home decoration projects to art and graphic designing.
