Delhi Launches SmartBikes to Boost Cycling Infrastructure and Reduce Pollution
Delhi is boosting its cycling infrastructure with the launch of SmartBikes, a revamped bikesharing platform, and plans to add more cycles and tracks. The city aims to promote pollution-free, fitness-friendly short trips while improving connectivity.
Delhi's 100km-long cycle track has faced challenges with other vehicles using the path and lack of safety features. The new SmartBikes, introduced by the Delhi government, is part of efforts to make cycling more appealing and safer.
The platform has seen encouraging response, with over 5,000 registrations within a month of its trial launch. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) installed 25 stands with 300 bicycles during this period. The NDMC plans to add 500 more bikes by next year and create cycling tracks on service lanes.
Cycling is already popular in Delhi, with 30% of residents owning bicycles and 12% of its workforce cycling to work, according to the 2011 census. However, previous bikesharing and rental schemes had mixed success. The city hopes that SmartBikes will change this trend.
With only 19% of Delhi's working population using private vehicles, there's potential for cycling to grow. SmartBikes and planned infrastructure improvements could plug last-mile connectivity gaps in the Metro transit and offer tourists a green way to explore the city. The success of this initiative could transform Delhi's streetscape and air quality.
