Rooshad Shroff, a renowned Mumbai-based designer, has launched a new furniture collection named Balance. This latest offering marks a significant shift away from his previous designs, with a focus on pushing the boundaries of structure.
Shroff's early furniture designs were handmade in his father's garage, and his passion for experimentation has only grown since then. He has worked for global architecture firms including OMA in New York, Zaha Hadid Architects in London, and Foster + Partners, before returning to India in 2011.
The materials used in the Balance collection are as diverse as they are striking. Marble, onyx, white bronze, and cashmere are all featured, with the beauty of the stone being the main focus. There is no surface treatment, allowing the natural materials to speak for themselves.
Each piece of onyx in the collection has its own unique grain structure and colouration, adding to the collection's organic appeal. The chairs and sofas are upholstered in cashmere, providing a luxurious contrast to the raw materials.
The collection showcases the strength of natural materials and challenges perceptions around form. Many pieces come together like pebbles stacked on top of each other, creating a harmonious balance. The collection includes coffee tables with massive cantilevers, five-foot long overhangs, and more.
Shroff plans to work with thin copper, brass, or silver wire in future collections, aiming to create a lace-like inlay. This is a departure from his current focus on raw materials, but it's clear that Shroff is not afraid to push the boundaries of design.
Shroff's furniture designs serve as a testing ground for different crafts, techniques, and materials that influence his interior works. His embroidery on furniture pieces was later used on wall cladding in Christian Louboutin and Louis Vuitton stores in Mumbai, showcasing his versatility.
Rooshad Shroff is currently obsessed with marble and has created a marble lightbulb out of a singular block. His collections involve a mix of different techniques, including layering materials and skills on top of each other.
