Discussion with Artist Lars Breuer held during Memorial Day at Resurrection Church
In the heart of Germany, six municipalities - Arnsberg, Bestwig, Brilon, Meschede, Schmallenberg, and Sundern - are experiencing a unique cultural revolution. The intermunicipal art project, titled "uproar," is a collaborative effort aimed at fostering dialogue and understanding among the diverse communities.
The project, created by Cologne artist Lars Breuer on behalf of the "uproar" municipalities, is based on the theme of "uproar." Each work, including Breuer's piece "Combination," which will be displayed in Arnsberg, features connections between word pairs closely linked to the location where they are displayed.
The word pair displayed in Arnsberg for Breuer's work is "CONSENSUS - CONTRAST." This choice reflects the city's need for more cooperation and compromise due to its differences, as well as the contrasting architectural styles that define Arnsberg. From civil servant city and industrial areas to half-timbered houses, classical facades, medieval alleys, modern houses, and natural landscapes, Arnsberg is a beautiful blend of the old and the new.
The Auferstehungskirche in Arnsberg, the first Protestant church in predominantly Catholic Arnsberg, is the location for the presentation of this work. This historic church adds a touch of tradition to the contemporary art project.
The "Combination" project is funded by the Hochsauerlandkreis and Sparkasse Mitten im Sauerland, demonstrating the local community's support for this initiative.
A roundtable discussion with Lars Breuer, among others, is scheduled as the joint kick-off of the project on Sunday, September 21st, at 6 PM on Kaiser-Otto-Platz in Meschede. This event promises to be an exciting opportunity to delve deeper into the project's themes and intentions.
The municipalities where the "uproar" project is taking place were combined 50 years ago during a municipal reorganization. This reorganization merged these smaller communities into the new administrative units they are today. Interestingly, the city of Herford, located approximately 200 miles west of the "uproar" municipalities, also underwent a similar reorganization 50 years before 2026, expanding and incorporating eight surrounding communities.
The joint closing event will take place on Sunday, January 18th, 2026, at 11 AM in the "Lenneatelier" in Schmallenberg. This event will mark the end of an exciting journey of collaboration, dialogue, and artistic expression in the "uproar" municipalities.
The word pairs in the "uproar" project originate from communication and are only manageable through it to achieve a democratic consensus. This project serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of dialogue and understanding in fostering unity and cooperation, especially in diverse communities.
