Leipzig District Fire Brigade Holds Drone Unit Meeting

On November 16, 2024, a significant gathering took place at the Fire Department Technical Center in Borna. The meeting, held virtually via zoom meeting, was attended by representatives from the joint drone squads of the Leipzig district, in collaboration with the KFV LK-L, and the rescue dog squad. The event was covered by news aktuell.

Philipp Hofmann, who invited the participants, expressed gratitude to the Kreisfeuerwehrverband Landkreis Leipzig for their support. The meeting served as an opportunity for an exchange of experiences between locations, discussing the possibilities of mutual cooperation.

Alexander Hecking, head of the department for operations, disaster, and environmental protection of the KFV Landkreis Leipzig, provided an insight into the development of the drone unit in the Leipzig district and announced important parameters for deployment. Hecking also shared the increasing deployment figures of the respective drone locations in the district.

Florian Knochenmuß, representing the interest group drone of the Saxon Fire Association, viewed capability management as an essential tool for future-oriented work. Knochenmuß expressed his thoughts on potential developments in the drone market.

Mathias Bessel, a guest speaker from the Saxon State Fire Association, discussed capability management with a focus on the deployment tool drone. Bessel's presentation was followed by a demonstration of the latest drone technology from the company Luftflug, presented by Karsten Jockisch.

The representatives of the rescue dog squad of LK-L gave an insight into their important work, highlighting the role of drones in rescue missions. The meeting concluded with a commitment to learn from each other's experiences in future meetings, as each location prepares to master upcoming tasks in fire and disaster protection, as well as civil protection.

For inquiries, contact Mike Köhler of Kreisfeuerwehrverband Landkreis Leipzig at [email protected] or visit the website kfv-lk-l.de. By next year, there should be a recommendation on how drone units should be set up, involving not only fire departments but also other aid organizations. Despite the increasing numbers, many deployment leaders are still not familiar with the deployment tool drone, requiring continued investment in training. A change of thinking within the entire fire department is necessary to adapt to these new technologies and tackle the challenges of the future.
