Dormagen maintains its status as a Fairtrade Town after successful recertification by the governing body.

In the heart of Germany, the city of Dormagen has once again been recognised as a Fairtrade Town, a testament to its unwavering commitment to sustainable and fair trading. The city's renewed certification was confirmed in 2023, marking its fifth year as a Fairtrade Town.

The city's journey towards fair trade began several years ago, with numerous actions and events aimed at promoting fair trade. In 2017, Dormagen was officially recognised as a "Fairtrade Town" by Fairtrade Germany e.V., and since then, it has been steadfast in its efforts to uphold this title.

One of the ways Dormagen has demonstrated its commitment is through its participation in the "Fairbruary" action month. During this month, various initiatives focused on fair trade take place in the city, shedding light on the importance of fair production conditions worldwide.

One such event is the annual sustainability market, where the environmental team informs citizens about the significance of fair trade. Here, locals can learn about the impact of their purchasing decisions on producers in developing countries and how they can make a difference through their consumer choices.

The city administration's dedication to fair trade has not gone unnoticed. The certification as a Fairtrade Town was granted by the organisation Fairtrade, with certification services exclusively provided by FLOCERT. Dr. Martin Brans, Technical Deputy Mayor of Dormagen's city administration, has stated that the renewed award highlights the city's commitment to sustainable and fair trading.

Regular meetings of the steering group ensure that new projects are initiated and existing ones are further developed. This group plays a crucial role in maintaining Dormagen's status as a Fairtrade Town.

As of 2023, there are over 2,000 certified Fairtrade Towns in 36 countries, including cities like London, Rome, Brussels, and San Francisco. In Germany, 914 municipalities hold the title of Fairtrade Town, making Dormagen part of a growing global movement towards fair and sustainable trading.

With its renewed certification, Dormagen continues to set an example for other cities in Germany and around the world, demonstrating that commitment to fair trade can be a powerful force for positive change.
