"Drive-thru Style": Innovative Playground Debuts on Theresienwiese
New Playground and Sports Stations Open at Theresienwiese, Munich
Theresienwiese, the large open space known primarily for hosting major events like the Oktoberfest and seasonal fairs, has a new attraction for its younger visitors. A newly constructed playground and sports facilities have been unveiled, offering a variety of activities for children and adults alike.
The playground, located directly at the Theresienwiese U-Bahn station, covers an area of 4400 square meters and is designed with a barrier-free facility, including a public toilet with a changing table and water dispenser. The playground tower stands at 12 meters high, offering multiple playable platforms at different levels.
Children can climb the tower via various climbing nets, bridges, ramps, and walkways. The playground also features swings and a nest swing, as well as a central element called the "Natter," offering climbing and balancing options, a mini slide, a play cave, and a trampoline.
Seven sports and four play stations along the Bavariaring have been renovated and redesigned for all age groups. These facilities include a fitness course with calisthenics equipment, a slackline, strength equipment, push-up and stretching stations, and a senior-friendly station. The streetball field and table tennis tables were also renovated.
The playground was planned with input from children, with Mayor Dieter Reiter comparing it to a Wiesn ride. Building Councilor Ehbauer expressed pleasure in fulfilling the children's wishes for the playground, particularly those of the elementary school children of the Schwanthaler School who requested the renovation in 2019.
The playground north of the Theresienwiese has been reopened, and security personnel and continuous lighting during the Wiesn ensure its usability. The total costs for all the facilities of the project were around 3.2 million euros.
