Dusseldorf: Invitation extended by DRC for underprivileged individuals to enjoy schnitzel with fries
DRK Düsseldorf Serves Christmas Meal to Homeless and Needy Residents
The German Red Cross (DRK) in Düsseldorf hosted its 16th consecutive Christmas meal for homeless and needy individuals on December 26. The event, newly planned and organized by Angelika Jaroschek and Ralf Schön, took place on Johannes-Rau-Platz and featured a small Christmas village, complete with a catering wagon named "GW Pommes" equipped with cooking facilities.
The DRK prepared a festive meal for the guests, with delicious food such as schnitzel with fries and coleslaw being cooked in three fryers at the catering wagon. There was a long queue at the serving point that lasted until the afternoon, with drinks of all kinds and a friendly smile from the helpers available for all.
In addition to the meal, guests were offered a variety of items, including hygiene products, hats, sweaters, socks, and other items. If they so desired, they could take a seat in one of the tents where drinks, sweets, and other items were available. There was also a candy bar where guests could put together colorful bags.
The Jugendrotkreuz, a regular group that meets for youth work, was happy to be part of the deployment. If you are interested in the work of the DRK and youth work, you can find more information here.
The team had prepared for 250 guests for the meal, but the long queue indicated that more people had turned up. The distribution of donations, including bags of hygiene articles and clothing, took place at the event.
Angelika Jaroschek and Ralf Schön were delighted with the satisfied faces of the guests. Some volunteers even went along the Rhine with a donation box to ask passersby for their support. The feedback from the guests showed that they were open to a different food option, and the new equipment wagon allowed the DRK to prepare food on-site for the meal.
Jaroschek and Schön were pleased with the success of the event and hope to continue serving the homeless and needy in Düsseldorf for many Christmases to come.
