In the heart of the city, a new gathering space has emerged, as the green space located between Hochstraße, Howaldtstraße, and Helmstedter Straße undergoes a significant transformation. The redesign, which cost approximately 132,000 euros, was officially unveiled on Wednesday, September 10th, by Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum.

The revamped green space now boasts a variety of fitness equipment, including a full-body trainer, a stability trainer, and a hip and back trainer, catering to those seeking physical activity. For those looking for a more relaxed experience, new seating options have been added, such as a picnic combination, sun loungers, a pergola, and even a solar-powered bench—the first of its kind in a municipal green space—perfect for charging smartphones.

The design of the redesigned green space bears a striking resemblance to an earlier development near the Hochstraße, which was unfortunately destroyed during World War II. As a nod to this historical context, the pergola with two benches in the southeastern part of the green space, as well as the steel structure in the southern access area, subtly hint at the pink building that once stood there.

The redesigned green space is not just a space for physical activity and relaxation, but also for community gathering. Both the northern and eastern entrances are barrier-free, ensuring accessibility for all. In the spirit of inclusivity, the green space is designed to be inviting to both young and old.

The design of the redesigned green space was carefully crafted, taking into account suggestions from the neighbouring DRK neighbourhood development and the wishes of students from the Martha-Fuchs School. The city district council also approved the design, ensuring that it meets the needs and preferences of the community.

In addition to the physical changes, the redesigned green space is also intended to gather data on its acceptance. This will provide valuable insights for future developments in the city's green spaces.

Shrubs will be planted along Helmstedter Straße in the fall, further enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the redesigned green space. As the leaves change colour and the space matures, it is set to become an even more beloved part of the city.
