Retired Couple Makes a Fortune with Rare Wollemi Pine Tree
In a surprising turn of events, a retired couple from Wichenford, Worcestershire county, England, has made a significant fortune from a Wollemi pine tree. Pamela and Alistair Thompson, the lucky owners, discovered seeds from the prehistoric conifer for the first time in April this year.
The seeds, which have been valued up to $11 each, could potentially earn the couple tens of thousands of dollars in the coming years if each cone produces hundreds of seeds. This discovery was made possible by the couple's loving care for the tree.
The Wollemi pine, a plant that has been around since the time of the dinosaurs and has existed for over 90 million years, was long thought to be extinct. However, in 1994, a group of these ancient conifers was discovered in Australia. Since then, saplings and cuttings of Wollemi pines have been sold worldwide.
Pamela and Alistair Thompson bought their Wollemi pine as a sapling in 2010 for just $94 from a shopping TV channel. The seeds from the tree, even today, remain valuable, with each seed worth up to $11.
The proceeds from the sale of the Pine Garden pair, as the couple's Wollemi pine tree is now known, will support the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and the Botanic Gardens Conservation International. The couple plans to use the proceeds to help protect the endangered Wollemi pine species and contribute to charitable causes.
The Wollemi Pine Group initiated the fundraising for the preservation of the endangered Wollemi Pines. The discovery of seeds on their Wollemi pine tree in England has added another success story to their efforts.
The New York Post reported that each seed from the Wollemi pine tree is worth more than $6,716, highlighting the rarity and significance of this discovery. The Thompson's Wollemi pine tree has produced seeds for the first time, making it a valuable addition to the conservation efforts for this ancient conifer.
