BYD Electric Vehicles Make Their Debut in Nigeria

In a significant move towards sustainable mobility, LOXEA Nigeria, a subsidiary of the CFAO Mobility group, has introduced BYD electric vehicles to the Nigerian market. The grand launch event took place at the Alliance Francaise in Ikoyi, Lagos, and marked the beginning of a new era for electric vehicles in Nigeria.

The new showroom, located in Victoria Island, Lagos, will offer a modern space for customers to discover the future of mobility. According to Mr. Mehdi Slimani, Managing Director of LOXEA Nigeria, the showroom will provide a platform for Nigerians to explore the world of electric vehicles.

At the launch event, the BYD Atto 3 and BYD Dolphin models were presented, creatively designed by Pith Africa, a contemporary art collective. LOXEA is expanding its electric vehicle offerings to Nigerian customers, aiming to make electric mobility more accessible.

The entry of BYD into Nigeria, as emphasized by Marc Hirschfeld, CEO of CFAO Mobility, presents a significant opportunity to transform the urban transportation landscape in Africa. Mr. Hirschfeld highlighted that BYD's innovation aligns with the needs of African cities, offering solutions that are practical and sustainable.

However, the current status and impact of BYD electric vehicles in the Nigerian market are promising but limited. The Nigerian EV market is in a nascent and challenging stage, with electric vehicles representing less than 1% of total vehicle sales as of early 2025. The market is growing but constrained by limited charging infrastructure and affordability issues.

Recent government policies have aimed to address these challenges. Effective in 2025, import duties have been lowered, VAT and import adjustment taxes on EVs have been waived, and foreign automakers are required to commit to local assembly within three years. These policies aim to reduce costs, encourage local production, and raise EV adoption to 30% of new vehicle sales by 2033 and full zero-emission vehicle deployment by 2040.

LOXEA is providing necessary infrastructure for electric vehicles, including charging stations, maintenance and repair services, and the supply of authentic spare parts. In addition, LOXEA is planning to offer flexible home-charging solutions to make electric vehicle ownership more accessible to customers.

Nigeria is positioning itself among the growing number of African nations adopting sustainable transport solutions with this introduction. The new showroom will offer a modern space for customers to discover electric vehicles and the future of mobility, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable Nigeria.
