In a harmonious blend of past and present, French fashion designer Simon Porte Jacquemus recently unveiled his Spring-Summer 2026 collection at the iconic Château de Versailles. The collection, titled **"Le Paysan"** (The Peasant), was a poignant tribute to the designer's rural upbringing in the South of France.
The Château de Versailles, a masterpiece of 17th-century classical architecture, served as an exquisite backdrop for the show. Commissioned by Louis XIV to embody absolute power, the château now stands as a testament to unparalleled refinement, with its Hall of Mirrors, Grand Apartments, and sumptuous decors.
For his second show at Versailles, Jacquemus created a 150-meter catwalk of sea rush, bordered by an open-air front row. The collection took an emotional turn with models dressed in black, evoking loss, memory, and heritage. The palette included Jacquemus’ signature crisp white, lemon yellow, pale blue, black, and cream, creatively revisiting and reinterpreting silhouettes from his earlier works with refined craftsmanship.
The Spring-Summer 2026 collection paid homage to rural fashion, featuring modern, fluid, refined garments that blended womenswear and menswear. The designs included headscarves traditionally used in the countryside, billowy off-the-shoulder sun dresses, sharp cigarette trousers, see-through chiffon gowns, and oversized lapels that doubled as pockets.
Inspiration for the collection came from aprons, tablecloths, lace, and shawls from the past, symbolising a return to roots. This collection was a discreet nod to the designer's mother, who passed away in 2008.
The Château de Versailles, spanning over 63,000 m2 and housing 2,300 pieces, with 1,000 open to the public, provided a breathtakingly majestic setting for the SS26 collection. The collection was a nostalgic yet elegant celebration of Jacquemus' rural upbringing, reflecting simplicity, craftsmanship, and a poetic connection to the French countryside.
Château de Versailles, located just 16 km from Paris, is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
