In an effort to deter bicycle theft, the Mettmann County Police have announced the launch of the "BlockiT" action. This initiative, which is not limited to specific locations and dates, encourages the use of a combination of physical and technological safeguards to protect bicycles from theft.

The "BlockiT" action offers a free bicycle coding service, available at several locations including Ratingen, Velbert, Wülfrath, and Monheim am Rhein in August. Appointments for bicycle coding in Hilden can be made by contacting the Mettmann County Police at 02104 982-7777. Bicycles can also be coded independently of the mentioned dates by appointment at the police station in Hilden.

To ensure the safety of your bicycle, the Mettmann County Police recommend following these tips:

1. Use secure bike locks: Always secure your bicycle with a high-quality lock, ideally a U-lock or a robust chain lock. 2. Lock both frame and wheels: Ensure that the frame and at least one wheel are locked to an immovable object. 3. Park in well-lit, busy areas: Choose locations that are visible and frequented by people to deter thieves. 4. Register your bicycle: Registering your bike with local authorities or national databases can help recover it if stolen. 5. Mark your bike with identifiable features: Adding unique markings or using tamper-proof stickers can help identify your bike and discourage theft. 6. Utilise video surveillance and real-time monitoring: Systems like Prime CC's real-time surveillance enable instant detection of unauthorized bike movements, as seen with cases of thieves caught red-handed[1].

As part of the "BlockiT" action, coded bicycles will receive a particularly resistant sticker that is difficult to remove. The coding will be done by experts from the Criminal Prevention/Victim Protection department of the Mettmann County Police. Each coded bicycle will be recorded with an identification number in a database, allowing the coded bicycle to always be assigned to its rightful owner.

Interested bicycle owners should bring their bicycle, an ID with a photo, and if available, the purchase receipt or technical documents of the bicycle to the coding event. The coding will take place at the following times: August 4th from 11 am to 1 pm, August 6th from 11 am to 1 pm, August 11th from 12 pm to 2 pm, and August 13th at an unspecified time.

For further information about the bicycle coding, contact the Mettmann County Police at 02104 982-7777. The "BlockiT" action provides an additional option for bicycle owners to secure their bicycles beyond the regular coding events.
