Enjoyment, Amusement, and Chilling Out

Nordhorn, a charming city in Germany, has taken a unique approach to both entertainment and climate adaptation by upgrading six of its publicly accessible playgrounds to include crazy games with water. These water games, now a popular attraction for both children and adults, offer a fun and refreshing way to beat the summer heat.

Heinz Silies, from the city planning and environment department of Nordhorn, explains that the goal of these upgraded playgrounds is to create attractive and active spaces for the community. Ground trampolines, a hit in participation rounds for the play and neighborhood park concept, are a testament to this success.

The city's commitment to quality and sustainability is evident in the improvements made to the playgrounds. Roughly hewn sandstone blocks have been added at the Rotdornweg playground for jumping, balancing, and seating. Meanwhile, the outdated rail track at the Rüschenweg playground has been completely renewed.

One of the most popular water games can be found in the Main Street, where children delight in the cool spray on hot days. New equipment has been added to the upgraded playgrounds, with two additional water games installed at the Im Birkenbusch and Akazienstraße playgrounds.

The city's play and neighborhood park concept extends beyond just water games. Participation rounds are held on site, encouraging community engagement and shared experiences. An overview map of all play and water play locations can be found at www.our website/spielplatz. Currently, the districts of Neuberlin and Blumensiedlung are in focus, but the city has plans for two more water playgrounds.

Playing with water in these crazy games promotes motor skills, creativity, and shared experiences for children. Since 2016, the city of Nordhorn has been implementing its play and neighborhood park concept district by district, transforming the city one playground at a time. Stay tuned for more updates on the city's ongoing projects!
