On a frosty January day in 1344, Thomas of Heton requested a license from King Edward III to fortify and fortify his manor of Chevelyngham. Remarkably, the original copy of this royal license is still housed at Chillingham Castle today, offering a glimpse into the castle's ancient roots.
Over the centuries, the castle passed through various hands, undergoing modifications, repairs, and additions. In the early 17th century, the Grey family regularized the building into a quadrangle, and in 1695, it belonged to the Earls of Tankerville by marriage.
The castle was left abandoned for nearly half a century following the death of the 7th Earl of Tankerville and the sale of its contents in 1933. The derelict structure seemed destined for decay. However, a fortunate turn of events occurred in 1981 when Sir Humphry Wakefield and his wife, the Hon Lady Wakefield, a descendant of the Grey family, took on the mammoth task of restoring the castle.
Against all odds, they not only managed to preserve the castle's fabric but turned it into a breathtaking masterpiece of imagination and beauty. Each room is brimming with eye-catching objects that reflect the Wakefields' passion for collecting and the arts.
