Expanded Lidl Chain Increases Presence in New Jersey with New Store

Lidl, the German discount supermarket chain, is set to open a new store in Hackensack, New Jersey, on July 25. This marks the company's latest expansion in the United States, particularly in suburban markets.

The new store at 150 River Street will be Lidl's first in nearly three years and a part of the company's aggressive growth strategy. Lidl is focusing on suburban segments while also moving into major cities, with the aim of tapping into communities where consumers seek value and quality.

Lidl US operates more than 180 stores across nine East Coast states and Washington, D.C., and currently has over 20 locations in New Jersey. The company is known for its private label brands, such as the Butcher's Specialty meat brand, which emphasizes quality and specialty cuts to appeal to discerning customers.

In addition to its private label brands, Lidl runs the Special Guest bakery program, which integrates unique, exclusive baked goods into their stores. The program introduces one new baked good every month, and for its Hackensack opening, Lidl will have two special guests: Cinnamon Raisin NY Bagel and the brand-new Banana Nut Muffin.

Starting mid-July, Lidl US will also offer Angel Hair Chocolate, a product featuring Turkish cotton candy, raspberry chocolate, and pistachio filling.

Lidl's expansion strategy is not limited to the East Coast. The company, part of Schwarz Group, operates more than 12,000 stores in 31 countries, employing over 360,000 employees globally.

Meanwhile, other grocery retailers are also making moves. For instance, Tops Markets has opened its latest store in Ellenville, New York, investing $2M and creating over 120 jobs. Heritage Grocers, another player in the market, has announced customer-first initiatives, including partnerships with Instacart, Caper, and RELEX, to define modern, Hispanic, and tech-forward grocery shopping.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Lidl store in Hackensack will start at 7:40 a.m. According to Placer.ai research, Lidl is making inroads in suburban markets, and the rebuilt Harris Teeter store in North Carolina reflects a shared spirit of resilience, acting as a hub of the community in both good and bad times. Lidl's strategic expansion and curated product lines are helping the company carve out a niche in competitive grocery retail by focusing on value, quality, and exclusive offerings targeted at suburban customers.
