Exploring Materia 2.0: Milan's Fresh Material Library Unveiled - A Goldmine for Design Enthusiasts

Materia 2.0, a new material library in Milan, Italy, was unveiled during Milan Design Week 2025. The project, founded by Fabio Pecora, aspires to become a center of excellence for research, design, and interdisciplinary exchange, not just a showroom.

Located in Porta Nuova, Materia 2.0 boasts a vast collection of architectural materials, including metal, glass, ceramic, porcelain stoneware, concrete, marble, natural stone, wood, terracotta, resin, fabric, and cement grit. The material library covers 500 square meters, making it the largest materials library in Italy.

The immersive exhibition spaces at Materia 2.0 feature furniture and experimental installations made from various materials. One of the materials showcased is CP Parquet, a long-standing Venetian flooring company, used to create a coordinated table and bookshelf. The visual impact of Materia 2.0 is striking, with a 30m-long gallery and over 15,000 products arranged like books on a library shelf.

Materia 2.0 is not commercially driven; its goal is to be a tool for exploration and experimentation. The project aims to provide an open dictionary of materials for experimentation, rather than focusing solely on selling products. Each material sample is standardized to a manageable 20x20cm format and accompanied by information panels and QR codes for easy access to additional information.

Silvia Spreafico serves as the design manager at Materia 2.0. The library's website, Materia2puntozero.it, offers a daily digest of inspiration, escapism, and design stories from around the world via its newsletter. Materia 2.0's Milanese collaborative origin is closely related to FUORISALONE 2025, a key design event enhancing the visibility of material innovations in the region.

Materia 2.0's exhibition spaces encourage the combination of materials in bold and unexpected ways, fostering design innovation during Milan Design Week 2025. Its commitment to modular ceramic systems with broadened format options reflects evolving material technologies in architecture and design.
