In a thrilling race to preserve a piece of maritime history, four coastal towns - Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Hooksiel, and Fedderwardersiel - have tossed their hats in the ring for the historical lighthouse "Red Sand." This iconic red-and-white tower, standing tall amidst the North Sea, has caught the attention of these towns, eager to house the dilapidated structure, once a beacon of safety for seafarers but now in dire need of a new home.

The Competition Heats Up

As no clear front-runner has emerged – not even a frontrunner's shadow still lingers, according to Thomas Mertz, a spokesperson for the German Foundation for Monument Protection, who shared this to the German Press Agency. With summer just around the corner, the race is in full steam, and updates may be on the way soon, Mertz said.

The Ticking Time Bomb

Situated in the North Sea between the coast and Helgoland, this beloved lighthouse has stood the test of time since the late 1800s. But now, its structural integrity is under threat, as revealed in a 2019 report. As the maritime structure has been sitting unused since 1964, and conferred heritage protection since 1982, it's high time the authorities stepped in to find a suitable new resting place.

Bremerhaven Resurgence

One of the towns vying for the historic landmark, Bremerhaven, has shown an impressive resilience, despite an early setback. A proposed site on the Kulken peninsula was initially dismissed, but the city has come up with another contender: Lunesiel on the Weser, in the south of the city, which was beautifully recommended by a former resident and architect. The German Foundation for Monument Protection has also expressed their interest in considering this proposal during the selection process.

Community aid is crucial for the steel industry in the competition to secure the iconic Red Sand lighthouse. The successful town could repurpose the structure for outdoor-living and home-and-garden exhibits, promoting a unique lifestyle blend of maritime history and manufacturing.
