Renovated Playground in Mannheim: A Community Hub for All
In the heart of Mannheim, the playground next to Friedrichsfeld School has undergone a significant transformation, reopening its doors to families, children, and the community since June. This renovation is part of the urban renewal measure 'Friedrichsfeld Center' and is a testament to Mannheim's commitment to being a child-friendly city.
The renovated playground was designed with inclusivity in mind, appealing to children with different interests and abilities. It meets the inclusion level 3, ensuring accessibility for all, including wheelchair users. The playground's design is a reflection of the city's playground concept adopted by the city council in 2016, further implemented with this renovation.
The project's cost of approximately 430,000 euros will be partially reimbursed by the federal government and the state of Baden-Württemberg, with 60% of the cost being covered. The renovation is funded within the framework of the 'Social Cohesion' program.
The celebration of the renovated playground was graced by the First Mayor of Mannheim, Prof. Dr. Diana Pretzell, along with residents, school staff, and various community groups. Their comments and suggestions were incorporated into the development of the plans, ensuring the playground caters to the needs of the community.
The playground features a mix of classic equipment like parallel bars, swings, and a sand area with a small slide, as well as unique features such as a nest swing, talking telephones, a seating area, and a climbing route with towers. Two highlights of the playground are the spinning ring and the play barn. From the towers, there are thrilling slides possible, either through the tube slide or the open slide.
To aid visually impaired individuals, the playground includes an optical and tactile guidance system. The city's commissioner for the concerns of people with disabilities, Ursula Frenz, provided valuable tips during the planning process.
The city of Mannheim has been carrying the 'Child-Friendly Municipality' seal since January 2023, and this renovated playground is a testament to its commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive spaces for its community. The playground is not just a place for children to play, but a meeting point for the community, fostering social cohesion and a sense of belonging.
