Gen-Z Turn to Grandparents for Advice and Knowledge, Thanks to Tech
A recent study, commissioned by mobile network operator Three, has shed light on the significant role grandparents play in the lives of Generation Z (Gen-Z). The research, conducted ahead of Silver Sunday (October 5th), reveals that a vast majority of Gen-Z rely on their grandparents for advice and consider them a 'key resource' for knowledge. Technology has been a key enabler in bringing these generations closer.
The study found that 53% of Gen-Z seek advice from their grandparents a few times a month or more. This could be for a variety of reasons, with friendship advice, cooking family recipes, and gardening being among the most common. Interestingly, 87% of Gen-Z consider their grandparents a 'key resource' for knowledge, highlighting the wealth of experience and wisdom they possess.
Technology has played a significant role in facilitating this intergenerational bond. 78% of Gen-Z report that technology has helped them stay closer to their grandparents. This is not just about staying connected; 66% of Gen-Z believe that technology helps their grandparents feel more included in their life. 51% of Gen-Z regularly speak to their grandparents on their mobile, using platforms like WhatsApp and FaceTime.
The study also highlights the tech-savviness of grandparents, with 73% now being online. Despite often needing tech support from their grandchildren, 58% of grandparents are perceived as more tech-savvy than expected. The most common tech skills Gen-Z teach their grandparents are making video calls, using social media, and online banking. Three, the mobile network operator that commissioned the study, is celebrating this intergenerational bond and providing digital training sessions for the over 60s ahead of Silver Sunday.
