Green EnergyRoof Installations by Westenergie Netservice Across Rhineland Feature Solar Panels

Westenergie Netzservice Introduces Green Roof Photovoltaic Plants in Rhineland

Westenergie Netzservice, a key player in the Rhineland region of Germany, is leading the way in sustainable energy solutions with the implementation of green roof photovoltaic (PV) plants. These innovative installations combine solar panels with vegetated roof surfaces, offering numerous benefits for the environment and the local community.

Operational Green Roof PV Projects

Westenergie Netzservice has successfully deployed several green roof PV projects on commercial and industrial buildings across the Rhineland. These operational installations are currently contributing to the local grid, supporting Germany's ambitious energy transition goals.

Benefits of Green Roof PV Plants

  1. Renewable Energy Generation: The PV plants generate clean electricity on-site, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
  2. Urban Heat Island Mitigation: The vegetation on these green roofs helps cool the surrounding area, mitigating urban heat islands common in built-up areas.
  3. Improved Roof Longevity: Green roofs protect the roofing materials from extreme weather and UV radiation, extending roof lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.
  4. Stormwater Management: Vegetated roofs absorb rainwater, reducing runoff and easing pressure on urban drainage systems.
  5. Biodiversity Support: Green roofs provide habitats for local flora and fauna, supporting urban biodiversity even in industrial zones.
  6. Space Efficiency: By combining solar power with green roofing, the installations maximize the use of rooftop space without competing for land area.

Specifications of the Plants

The two recently commissioned plants - one in Büllesheim and the other in Euskirchen - cover a combined area of 569 square meters. The Euskirchen plant, installed in June 2025, boasts a capacity of 41.8 kWp and is equipped with 92 modules. The Büllesheim plant, on the other hand, has a capacity of 28.8 kWp and comprises 64 modules.

Lukas Schickling, Sven Tischer, and Jan Poppe were present at the commissioning of the two new photovoltaic plants in Euskirchen and Büllesheim on August 6. These plants, located on the roofs of two substations of the regulated network operation, generate renewable energy and improve the building climate by providing cooling in summer and insulation in winter.

Westnetz GmbH ordered the rooftop photovoltaic plants for the mentioned substations. Westenergie Netzservice GmbH accompanies more than 6,500 customers reliably through all project phases, from planning to implementation to operation and maintenance. These green roof PV plants represent an innovative approach to sustainable urban infrastructure, aligning with regional and national energy and environmental objectives in Germany.

  1. In addition to commercial and industrial buildings, Westenergie Netzservice is exploring opportunities to implement green roof photovoltaic plants in the home-and-garden sector, promoting sustainable living and renewable-energy generation even at the household level.
  2. Finance plays a crucial role in the expansion of the renewable-energy industry, and Westenergie Netzservice encourages partnerships with financial institutions to support the deployment of innovative, sustainable solutions like green roof PV plants.
  3. As lifestyle trends continue to prioritize environmental consciousness, Westenergie Netzservice envisions a future where green roof PV plants become a common feature not just in industrial districts, but also in residential neighborhoods, parks, and even shopping malls, fostering a culture of sustainable living.
  4. The successful integration of green roof PV plants into the Rhineland region's energy landscape serves as a model for other regions, demonstrating the potential of such installations in reducing carbon footprint, managing stormwater, and supporting local biodiversity, thus promoting sustainable-living practices on a broader scale.
