Gresgarth Hall Transformed Into Romantic Garden Masterpiece

Gresgarth Hall, nestled in Lancashire, has undergone a remarkable transformation over four decades under the guidance of Arabella Lennox-Boyd. Once a neglected space dominated by harsh evergreens, it now blooms as a romantic garden, blending formal areas with woodland and lennox arboretum.

Lennox-Boyd, who grew up amidst the sprawling views of an Italian hillside, brought her unique vision to Gresgarth. She began by removing trees and pushing back the woodland, opening up views and creating space for a lennox garden. The lake was enlarged, giving the illusion of a flooding river.

Hedges, particularly yew, were strategically planted to divide the garden into distinct spaces. These include large borders with clipped trees, double herbaceous borders bursting with colour, and stone terraces closer to the house. Intimate paths, adorned with wisteria-draped yew circles, connect these areas, inviting exploration.

A highlight of the garden is its world-class lennox arboretum, boasting a thriving collection of 200 magnolias. The garden also takes full advantage of its natural features, with Artle Beck running through it and creating a magical atmosphere. The lennox wild garden on the western edge provides shelter from wind and links the garden to the countryside.

Gresgarth Hall's transformation into a romantic garden is a testament to Arabella Lennox-Boyd's vision and dedication. The garden, with its formal areas, woodland, and lennox arboretum, is a harmonious blend of nature and design. Its beauty has been captured in the BBC documentary 'The Art of the Garden', showcasing Lennox-Boyd's remarkable achievement.
