Grocery store, Nick's Family Grocery in Winthrop, receives a grant
In the heart of Winthrop, Iowa, Nick's Family Grocery is set to expand its hot meal offerings, thanks to the Iowa BOOST for Business Innovation - Rural Grocery Store Grant. This initiative, part of the broader Rural BOOST program, is managed by the Center for Rural Revitalization, a division of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA).
The Rural BOOST program provides expert assistance to community and business leaders in developing growth plans. It helps communities identify challenges and implement solutions for next-stage success, often focusing on overcoming plateaus or unexpected challenges.
To be eligible for the Rural Grocery Store Grant, projects must benefit communities in Iowa with a population of 20,000 or fewer and not contiguous to a city with a population of 40,000 or greater. Countywide projects must be in one of the 88 least populous counties.
Nick’s Family Grocery, a vital source of fresh food and community connection in Winthrop, has been awarded the grant. The store, re-established under new ownership, will use the grant funds to upgrade essential kitchen equipment, including two new convection ovens, a commercial broaster, and insulated food pan carriers.
With these improvements, Nick's Family Grocery will introduce take-and-bake meal options and launch a new meal delivery service. This service, reaching elderly residents, busy families, and rural households potentially up to five miles outside Winthrop, is expected to improve access to healthy options and support local economies.
Lisa Kremer, Executive Director of BCEDC, praised Nick's Family Grocery for its innovation, diversification, and dedication to the people it serves. She stated that the grant application for Nick's Family Grocery was submitted to support a vital local business serving rural communities. The application was written and submitted by Buchanan County Economic Development.
The kitchen equipment upgrades will support safe, hot deliveries for the new meal delivery service. The grant funds will also allow Nick's Family Grocery to enhance its in-store offerings, further cementing its role as a community hub.
The grant is a competitive program from the Center for Rural Revitalization, a division of the Iowa Economic Development Authority. It is an excellent example of how rural businesses can benefit from such initiatives, ensuring the sustainability of rural communities and improving the quality of life for their residents.
