High Water Levels Favor Karlsruhe's Excavators - One of Several Benefiting
Heading out for a swim in the beautiful lakes of Karlsruhe is just around the corner with summer temperatures rising! During the swimming season, from June 1st to September 15th, the state health department rigorously checks the water quality of these lakes. You can easily access these results through the convenient and straightforward bathing water map available online.
The color-coded grading system is simple: red signifies "deficient," yellow means "sufficient," green indicates "good," and blue stands for "excellent." The water quality is tested for two specific germs, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci (I.E.), which are commonly found in various parts of nature, as well as blue-green algae. These germs are measured in CFU per 100 milliliters, with each CFU representing a colony-forming unit of microorganisms capable of continued growth.
Here's some fantastic news: all lakes in Karlsruhe boast excellent water quality! The latest report, dated March 24th, showcases this impressive fact, save for the lake in Eggenstein, which received the ranking of "sufficient." The Staffort-Baggersee in Stutensee and the Baggersee Untergrombach received the "good" rating.
Can I still swim in the Eggensteiner See with its rating of "sufficient"?
It might surprise you, but the lake in Eggenstein earned this rating primarily due to test results from previous years. According to the district office, the lake "often stood out" in 2021.
"The evaluation of the bathing water quality by the state health department is based on the examination results from the last four years." Therefore, "a single current event does not change this classification" - results from three or four years ago are still considered in the evaluation.
So, no need to worry! Anyone wishing to take a dip in the Eggensteiner See can do so with confidence. The lake was last tested on May 19th, and the results showed significant improvement.
