Horror author in Iowa City launches fresh writing conference for genre enthusiasts
In the heart of Iowa City, a new literary event is set to make its debut next month. One of Us, focusing on horror, existential fiction, and cult fiction, aims to foster a horrifying literary community in the region.
Ira Rat, an Iowa City author and organiser of One of Us, has noticed a gap in horror events in Iowa. With only two such events last year, he saw an opportunity to bring together a community of horror enthusiasts.
The event, scheduled for Sept. 6 at Public Space One, will feature 19 invited guests and four presses whose work has won Shirley Jackson, Bram Stoker, and Splatterpunk awards, and has been featured in Fangoria, Rue Morgue, and Scream Magazine. Among the guests are authors Paula D. Ash, Joe Koch, and Matthew Mitchell, as well as independent publishers Weirdpunk Books, Cursed Morsels Press, and Filthy Loot Press.
Sam Richard, owner of Minneapolis's Weirdpunk Books, has noticed an increase in interest in the horror genre over the past few years. He will be present at One of Us, along with his press, showcasing their unique offerings.
The horror genre, according to Harriet Everend, is generally a niche market. However, she has noticed more public interest in indie horror, and her first book, "Cursed Legacy," published in 2021, is a testament to this growing trend. Everend, a Cedar Rapids horror author, opened a small independent press to publish her work and that of other writers.
The trends in horror today include a juxtaposition between visceral, bloody books and a more elevated version of horror, as seen in classic A24 films. One of Us promises to offer a diverse range of horror literature, catering to this broadening audience.
Admission to One of Us is free, making it accessible to all horror enthusiasts. For those interested in exploring horror beyond best-selling authors like Stephen King, One of Us offers an opportunity to discover new voices in the genre.
Ira Rat's press, which publishes approximately 10 books each year, focuses on more literary horror. Rat travels regularly to Minneapolis, Chicago, and the East Coast annually to showcase his work. He hopes One of Us will help bridge the gap in horror events in Iowa and contribute to the growth of the horror literary community in the region.
With the launch of One of Us, horror literature fans in Iowa City and beyond have something exciting to look forward to. The event promises to be a celebration of the genre, offering a platform for new voices and a chance for horror enthusiasts to connect and share their passion.
