Emilia and Noah are still ruling the roost when it comes to popular baby names in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) for the year 2024. That's the word from a recent analysis by the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache (GfdS), confirming the trend that parents in NRW followed in 2023.

Nationwide, Noah remains the most preferred boy's name, with Emilia holding the second spot. Sophia continues to be the most popular girl's name in Germany, similar to the previous year.

Andrea Ewels, GfdS business manager in Wiesbaden, shares her thoughts on the nationwide leaders: parents worldwide are drawn to names that sound pleasant and harmonious, especially those ending in vowels like Noah, Sophia, Emilia, and Luca. She adds that these names are usually short, easy to pronounce, and internationally comprehensible. They exude a sense of familiarity, modernity, and timelessness that parents appreciate.

The Top Three: Girls

In NRW, Sophia and Emma come after Emilia in the top girl's names. Different spellings are often combined, such as Sophia, Sofia, and Sophia.

For boys, Matheo and Mohammed follow Noah. Again, variations like Mohammed, Mohamed, and Muhammad are commonly encountered.

The GfdS has been publishing a list of most frequently used first names since 1977, based on records from registry offices. In 2024, around 750 registry offices across Germany participated, submitting nearly 900,000 individual names. This enables the GfdS to record almost 92% of all first names given in Germany for that year.
