Ineptly Timed Good Intentions - Dortmund's "Summer Street"
=====================================================================
Dortmund, August 14, 2025 — A new initiative, named "Summer Street," has been introduced in Dortmund with the aim of enhancing community engagement and improving the quality of life in the neighbourhood. The project, which is currently underway, has attracted mixed opinions from residents.
A total of 100,000 euros has been allocated for the implementation of Summer Street in 2025. So far, about a third of the budget has been spent on the project, which has resulted in the addition of extra benches, tables, a bubble machine, and a waffle iron. A waffle-making event is scheduled for 1 PM today on Saarlandstraße, which has been temporarily transformed into "Summer Street."
The project is an initial attempt by the city to boost community engagement on the streets. Researchers from Dortmund University of Applied Sciences are conducting interviews with residents and evaluating surveys as part of the monitoring process. The results of the evaluation will be provided by FH Dortmund.
Michael Vollmer, a house owner, has expressed his disapproval of the project, calling it a waste of money. He also complains about the worsened parking situation due to the closure of ten parking spots and their replacement with seating areas, or "parklets."
Opinions among residents are divided regarding the project. Some residents suspect that the café "116einhalb" will benefit the most from the expanded seating options. Dietmar Stahlschmidt, possibly a city official, defends the project, stating that it is designed to foster a vibrant community atmosphere.
Lokalzeit aus Dortmund, a local news program, will report on this topic on August 14, 2025, at 7:30 PM. The evaluation of the project's success is expected to take until October.
