Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate – Mayor Peter Jung has demonstrated a commitment to improving accessibility, inclusion, and social justice for people with disabilities. Through various initiatives and pledges, the city of Neuwied is working towards becoming a model for accessibility and inclusion in the region.

In a recent Girl's Meeting of the Association for People with Disabilities Neuwied/Andernach, the challenges faced by wheelchair users when boarding and exiting public transportation were discussed. The girls emphasised the need for barrier-free playgrounds, lowered pedestrian crossings, and accessible public transportation. In response, Mayor Jung pledged to personally ensure the considerations of the Girl's Meeting are taken into account.

One of the key initiatives by Mayor Jung is the enhancement of barrier-free infrastructure. Comprehensive audits of public buildings are being carried out to ensure compliance with the latest accessibility standards. This includes installing ramps, elevators, tactile guidance systems, and accessible restrooms in municipal buildings, schools, and sports facilities. Collaboration with local transit authorities has led to improvements in public transportation, with initiatives to ensure buses and stations are fully accessible, including low-floor buses and audio-visual announcements for people with visual or hearing impairments.

Inclusive urban planning is another focus area. Universal design principles are being implemented in new urban developments and renovations, ensuring public spaces such as parks, squares, and pedestrian zones are navigable by people with varying mobility needs. Funding for community projects that promote social integration, such as inclusive playgrounds, has been increased.

Education and awareness campaigns are also a significant part of Mayor Jung's initiatives. Educational programs in schools and workplaces focused on disability awareness, anti-discrimination, and social inclusion are being launched to foster a more empathetic and informed community. Support is being provided for local organisations that advocate for people with disabilities, encouraging partnerships to better address their needs.

Employment and social participation are also priorities. Initiatives aimed at increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities within municipal government and local businesses are being introduced, including vocational training and subsidies. Support is being provided for social enterprises and accessible cultural events, ensuring people with disabilities can participate fully in social and cultural life.

Digital accessibility is another area of focus. A commitment has been made to make all municipal websites and digital services fully accessible, conforming to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), to ensure online information and services are available to everyone.

In the future, Mayor Jung has pledged to establish a dedicated task force to monitor and promote ongoing accessibility improvements in all sectors. Plans to expand outreach programs to ensure that people with disabilities have a direct voice in municipal decision-making processes are also in the works, strengthening participatory democracy.

The city of Neuwied has been officially recognised as the first child-friendly municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate since late 2023. The Girl's Meeting thanked Mayor Jung for his attentiveness and pledged to continue providing valuable input. The ideas, wishes, and concerns of young people are incorporated into future planning and decisions in Neuwied.

Mayor Jung regularly engages in dialogue with young people in schools, kindergartens, associations, and public playgrounds as part of the "Ask the Mayor" event format. Political topics such as climate protection, fair remuneration for the work of people with disabilities, and the failure of the traffic light coalition were discussed at the Girl's Meeting. The meeting reinforced for Mayor Jung the importance of listening to young people, particularly regarding inclusion and equal opportunities.

The girls at the Girl's Meeting expressed interest in the daily tasks of Neuwied's Mayor Peter Jung, and he willingly and extensively described his daily tasks during the meeting. They also advocated for more inclusive events like the disco previously held at the Big House to foster exchange and friendship between people with and without disabilities.

Mayor Peter Jung's initiatives and pledges reflect both local priorities and broader German standards for accessibility and equality. His commitment to making Neuwied a more inclusive and barrier-free city is commendable and serves as an example for other municipalities to follow.

  1. In the realm of home-and-garden, the focus on installing accessible infrastructure, such as ramps and tactile guidance systems, extends beyond municipal buildings to include communal spaces like parks and pedestrian zones, embodying the principle of universal design.
  2. In the world of politics and general news, the topic of disability awareness and social inclusion is not limited to policies within Neuwied; it extends to broader discussions, such as climate protection and fair remuneration for people with disabilities, making it a significant talking point in dialogues with young people in various settings.
  3. Moving forward in the lifestyle domain, outdoor-living enthusiasts might be encouraged to know that the ongoing efforts to establish a more accessible city, including outreach programs and inclusive events like the disco at the Big House, aim to create an environment where people of all abilities can enjoy leisure activities in harmony.
