Cracking Down: Kazakhstan Tightens Lockdown Amid COVID-19 concerns

In the face of continued breaches of mask regulations and social distancing, Kazakhstan authorities might intensify the lockdown according to Alexei Tsoi, Health Minister, who stated widespread disregard for safety measures at a government meeting on September 30. This neglect could potentially spark a spike in COVID-19 cases, as reported by Almaty.tv.

Thirty students attending in-person classes and 71 learning remotely have tested positive for the virus. Among their contacts, twenty-two also tested positive for COVID-19. Since the commencement of the academic year, there have been 104 cases of COVID-19 among students alone.

Alexei Tsoi warned that if lectures had been entirely offline, contacts could have escalated to approximately 1500 individuals, potentially fueling the disease's spread among students, educators, and family members.

Adding to the global pandemic's tense situation, Alexei Tsoi advised against hastily resuming air communications with other nations. A sudden increase in cases has been observed in Italy, Germany, Belarus, Russia, and other regions. The Ministry of Internal Affairs stands ready to bolster the lockdown and uphold public order. As per Interior Minister Yerlan Turgumbayev, six checkpoints have been set up in Atyrau and Aktobe regions, as mandated by the sanitary authorities' decree.

Turgumbayev also highlighted that police officers have noted over 15,000 serious violations of the lockdown during their service ensuring order. These transgressions include 600 illicit weddings and commemorative events, as well as more than 1,000 recreational areas functioning, even near water bodies.

Rumors of a second wave of the pandemic have led the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development to initiate the delivery of rapid response vehicles. Beibut Atamkulov, Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development, confirmed that 360 rapid response vehicles have been locally produced, with 93 already delivered to regions across Kazakhstan (Almaty - 35 units, Nur-Sultan - 14 units, North Kazakhstan - 18 units, Kostanay - 26 units). The remaining 264 will commence delivery today.

Regarding personal protective equipment, approximately 900,000 items are being produced in Kazakhstan, with 15 million masks in stock. Soon, almost 1200 ventilators will be released, to be delivered to all regions of the country by mid-October.

Recently, it was reported regarding the resumption of air communication with Russia.
