Let's Get Birdin' in Hessen! - Join the NABU's "Garden Bird Hour"
Wildlife Observation Initiative Launched: NABU Introduces 'Garden Bird Hour' - Launch of "Garden Birds' Hour" by NABU - a bird counting initiative
Wanna lend a feathered hand? NABU's got a sweet gig for you - the "Garden Bird Hour"! Folks in Hessen are eager to count critters, and not just those with fur and four legs. NABU Hessen has an especial interest in the swallows, who took a beating last autumn thanks to some nasty, relentless rain.
Here's the lowdown on this bird-a-palooza. From May 9th to the 11th, fellow citizens are welcome to spend an hour bird-watching in their gardens, outdoor spaces, or parks. Be sure to keep an eye peeled for swallows, as NABU's hoping to know their current numbers and whereabouts. If ya' lucky juju's with ya, the possible 2025 Bird of the Year, the house redstart, might make an appearance!
Ready to join in the fun? Just observe birds for an hour, spot 'em, and drop the highest number of each species you spot in one go. Report your findings either via the NABU BirdWorld app, online, or you can even put pen to paper if that's your groove.
Got some bird chirps you caught but couldn't spot? No worries! Your observations (even late ones) will still be accepted until May 19th.
As Bernd Petri, NABU's resident avian nerd, puts it, "We're yearning to learn where the house and sand martins are popping up after the autumn disaster."
The "Garden Bird Hour" is a jolly collaboration between NABU and its Bavarian partner LBV (Landesbund für Natur- und Vogelschutz).
