A 24/7 Community Bookcase Opens in Obertshausen, Germany

In the heart of Obertshausen, a new addition has graced Meininger Platz, near the train station. The town's latest attraction is a publicly accessible bookcase, funded by the Karl-and-Ruth-Mayer-Stiftung and part of the "Demokrativ" project, a program aimed at promoting democratic participation and community projects in the state of Hesse.

This innovative bookcase, open 24/7, seven days a week, is a testament to the town's commitment to fostering a culture of shared learning and easy access to literature. The project was made possible with the help of local volunteers, Leonie Wagner, Jutta Wolf, and Nicole Süß, who will take care of the order and maintenance of the bookcase.

The bookcase follows an open, community-driven model, relying on the honor principle and trusting users to handle the collection responsibly. Books can be taken to read without charge, and visitors are encouraged to donate books for others to enjoy. Books can be borrowed and returned at the user's convenience.

The bookcase is vandalism-proof, and the books inside must be in good condition and suitable for a wide readership. Certain types of content are not allowed, including works glorifying violence, racist or pornographic content, specialist literature, daily newspapers, or advertising flyers.

Mayor Friedrich has expressed his delight, stating that the bookcase is a great resource for many people. He also mentioned that he included the investment in the budget for 2024, indicating the long-term commitment of the town to this initiative.

Citizens can stay updated on city news, including any updates regarding the bookcase, by subscribing to the city district of Offenbach's free newsletter. More information about the newsletter and privacy policy can be found on their website.

The bookcase's location at Meininger Platz aligns with the city's improvement measures, making it easily accessible to commuters and residents alike. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also encourages community engagement and the spirit of sharing.

What about using this lifestyle change to bring a touch of home-and-garden tranquility to the bustling Meininger Platz bookcase? Visitors could contribute books on gardening, DIY projects, or home decor to create a cozy corner within the vandalism-proof space, promoting a sense of community and shared wisdom.
