Live Restaurant Possibly Exhibiting Signs of Biological Activity, Yet...
In the picturesque town of Penzlin, Germany, plans are underway to breathe new life into its historic castle. The city council, led by Mayor Sven Flechner and City President André Schardetzki, has unanimously agreed to the administration's proposal for the restaurant within the castle.
The restaurant, built in the mid-1990s, has been vacant since the last tenant closed its doors at the end of 2020. The equipment in the kitchen and dining rooms needs renovation, and the furniture, which was rented out to multiple tenants, is no longer available.
However, the city is driving on two tracks to reduce the risk of ending up with nothing. The visitor reception area in the castle is set to be made barrier-free and digitally equipped. This move is part of an initiative by the University of Rostock to offer digital and barrier-free experiences for visitors, such as virtual reality and 3D tours, at the museum in Penzlin.
The city is also aware of the need for better Wi-Fi networks to support digital offers and co-working spaces, a demand that has grown as more people move to rural towns like Penzlin to work digitally.
If no contract can be reached with new potential buyers for the restaurant, the city is considering a cultural bistro as an alternative. A grant application for the cultural bistro was made last year, but no recent or confirmed information is available online regarding either a sale or development plans for the old Penzlin Castle restaurant or a cultural bistro project in that location.
The city's plans still prioritise a restaurant over a bistro. The revitalisation of the restaurant is seen as a way to attract more visitors, with the city already benefiting from a camping site built in the Werder district in 2019 and the expansion of the cycling network around the city.
The former owner of the restaurant had invested in its equipment, a fact that may aid in its restoration. The city council's decision to proceed with the proposal for the restaurant is a positive step towards revitalising Penzlin's old castle and enhancing the town's appeal as a tourist destination.
The city council is deliberating the idea of transforming the vacant restaurant within the old castle into a lifestyle destination, featuring food-and-drink offerings that showcase local flavors and an expertly curated home-and-garden section, aiming to attract tourists and complement their existing initiatives such as the camping site and increased cycling network. A successful revitalization of the restaurant could potentially inspire digital nomads to consider Penzlin as their new home base, providing better Wi-Fi networks to support remote work and co-working spaces.
