The Solingen Bird and Animal Park, nestled near the Ohligser Heide nature reserve, kicked off the festive season with a heartwarming open day on the first Advent.

Visitors were greeted by the cheerful sounds of laughter and music, as animal sponsorships and annual passes proved popular during the pre-Christmas season. The day was a testament to the belief that joy comes from the interaction between animals and humans, shared by Janett Heinrich, the park's head animal keeper.

Janett, known for her personal favourites such as three raccoon dogs, Thomas the Thuringian forest goat, and Norbert the Anglo-Nubian goat buck, led the tours, sharing exciting stories about the various animals in the park. The lively cockatoos and grey parrots, moving to the tunes of their audience, were a particular highlight.

Another highlight was the curious kangaroos, which hopped around, raising numerous questions from visitors. Long lines of people formed at the crêpe stand, enjoying crêpes with Nutella, while children enjoyed punch and adults savoured mulled wine.

The event saw great engagement from club members and volunteers, with many contributing homemade or baked goods for the stands. The proceeds from these sales would go directly to the Bird Park, aiming to fill the upcoming Winterloch (financial gap) after the difficult times during Corona.

The park, home to around 300 animals from approximately 80 species, offers a unique experience, with each animal having its own area, and there being no fixed tour route. The day ended with visitors leaving with a smile on their face, not only having spent a lovely day but also contributing to the well-being of the animals.

Looking ahead, the park has initiated a fundraising campaign called "Herzenssache Vogelpark" starting in December 2024. This campaign focuses on improving the deteriorated social rooms for staff, including plans for a new building on the park’s grounds.

However, regarding alternative therapies for animals at the park, no explicit information is available in the current search results. For more specialized or up-to-date information, contacting the park directly would be advisable.

Between the stones were knitted worry dolls and funny owls in bright colors, adding to the festive atmosphere. The first Advent in the Ohligs Bird Park was a symbol of community and togetherness, a tradition that is sure to continue in the years to come.
